Artist Statement

I find art to be the most interesting method for exploring my fascination with the world, and my role in it. I am driven, in my practice, to explore issues of meaning, context, authorship, and creativity, using fresh personal formal techniques.

I work in collage, which I consider to be the fundamental expressive technique of our time. Obviously collage has long been a technique in visual art, including film, but it has also been explored extensively in the world of music, and that of literature. Much of the music we hear today is made up of appropriated samples of other works, recombined through mixing into many fresh argots. Cut-up techniques have been a staple of literature since at least T.S. Eliot.

My most recent work involves exploring and finding images on the internet, and collaging these appropriations into fresh contexts of personal and often enigmatic meanings. My work makes use of computers to produce a “hands-free” ultra-clean and refined aesthetic. The images are resurrected to their original beauty. In the spirit of Dada and the Surrealists, I want nothing to interfere visually with the stark juxtapositions on offer.
