When I first encountered Kandinsky, it was the German Expressionist style he worked in when he was part of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter. I was pretty put off by it (maybe too many farm scenes?)! But, as I discovered his later work of pure abstraction, I was profoundly affected. He had such a powerful imagination, and an ability to make exciting images out of conglomerations of simple shapes. He is now one of my very favorite artists.
